Selection Procedure & Exam Pattern of SBI Clerk

The State Bank of India invites application for the recruitment of Junior Associate (Clerical Cadre) every year. The complete recruitment process of SBI Clerk exam consists of three stages and every stage has different exam pattern to follow. In order to score good marks in the recruitment exam, you need to get well-versed with the exam pattern of every stage of the selection process of SBI Clerk exam.


The selection process of recruitment comprises of an online examination which is further divided into SBI Clerk Prelims and Mains and then followed by the local language test. Selection Process of SBI Clerk Exam


If you possess the graduation degree and wants to take active participation in this recruitment drive, you need to clear the different stages of the recruitment exam. You should know the new changes/ guidelines for the SBI Clerk Prelims, Mains, local language test, final allotment process in order to crack the exam in the first attempt.


Let’s now look at the complete selection process of SBI Clerk exam in detail below.


  1. SBI Clerk Prelims- After filling the online application form for SBI Clerk recruitment exam, you will be required to appear for the first stage of the selection procedure which is SBI Clerk Preliminary Exam. The exam will be objective kind covering major three sections. You will get 20 minutes for every section as the sectional timing which is released by the SBI from last year.

This stage is qualifying in nature and marks obtained in the Prelims exam will not be added in the final merit list of SBI Clerk exam. This stage is just the gateway for the candidates to appear for SBI Clerk Mains exam. Below is the tabulated form of the exam pattern of SBI Clerk Prelims.

Note: 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong attempt. No sectional or overall cut-off will be provided to the candidates for the selection to Mains exam. A number of candidates selected for SBI Clerk Mains will be decided by SBI which will be further based on the vacancies available.


  1. SBI Clerk Mains-  Being one of the important stages for the recruitment process of SBI Clerk exam, you can make it to the final merit list by scoring higher marks in this stage. No further interview round for the candidates after this Mains exam. Aggregate marks obtained in this stage will be considered for preparing the final merit list. No sectional or overall cut-off for the candidates. You just need to score minimum percentage on aggregate.

Note: In order to move ahead with the selection process, you need to score a minimum percentage marks which will be decided by the SBI. The merit list will be prepared State and Category wise for the selected candidates.


  1. SBI Clerk Local Language Test- After cracking SBI Clerk Mains, you will be going to appear for next recruitment process i.e. Local Language Test. This test is conducted to check the candidate’s proficiency in speaking, writing and reading of the opted local language. Furthermore, if you are able to provide a 10th or 12th certificate, verifying that you have studied the opted local language, you do not need to appear for this Local Language Test.

The test will be conducted after the provisional selection and before the joining process. Remember, you will be disqualified after this stage if you are not found proficient in opted local language test.


  1. SBI Clerk Provisional Selection- The final merit list will be prepared for the selected candidates after considering three important parameters, marks obtained in SBI Clerk Mains, eligibility for the post and qualifying the Opted Local Language Test.

After joining, you cannot have inter/intra-state transfer in the first five years of service.


You can be on Waiting List if you secure minimum qualifying marks. When the vacancies are available, from the current batch in the case of non-joining or resignation, then you will be considered for the job profile. Waitlist is valid for one year only.


The selected candidates will have to serve a minimum of 6 months under Probation period. During this probation period, you need to complete 15 prescribed e-lessons for getting confirmed. Failure of these lessons will lead to an extension of your Probation Period. Before confirming the job profile of candidates, the evaluation takes place. You need to clear that in order to end your probation period.
